The Internet Ad Backlash

October 1st, 2007

Tools like the Firefox add-on “Ad block plus” and even mainstream security products like McAffe Security Suite are causing major headaches for popular Internet websites which rely on advertising as a sole source of revenue. Some say greedy webmasters who riddle their sites with 10, 20, and sometimes even more ads per page are the blame for the widespread backlash. The worst offenders make you view full page ads before proceeding or use pop-ups or pop-unders.

The popularly of websites who are taking the “moral high ground” like craiglist and wikipedia are also causing headaches because they provide a quality alternative to other popular websites which have large amounts of ads. Will this soon bankrupt the major players or will they reinvent themselves?

September 22nd, 2007

You probably already know about I.P. addresses. They are the numbers of any Internet connected or any TCP/IP connected device. You probably recognize the format. For example 66.51.103.36 is the dedicated IP address for this website, computer-forensic-technician.com.

A friend recently received a phishing email with a strange address. It was a series of hexadecimal numbers. The friend said I knew it was a fraud because it wasn’t a real IP address. Well actually, it was a real IP address.

What do I do if my cell phone is stolen?

February 19th, 2007

A reader writes:

okay this isn’t exactly about phones being tapped. My friend was at a party and bent over to pick up something. Her cell phone had fallen out of her purse and she saw it and reached to get it. Right then and there some kid grabbed it and ran off. They couldn’t find him and went back to the place 2 times looking all over. Her phone is like her life… she has probabley 100 numbers.. and now they are going to have all her friends numbers, e-mails, and screen names. She doesn’t know what to do and i’ve been searching the whole internet for someone with advice. I am aware that the last resort is to shut off the phone but she is just at the begining of a second 2 year contract, meaning that she would have to pay it off if it wasn’t found. There must be some way of tracking it but i am not exactly the smartest person in the world to think of how. Thankfully her battery is dead becuase it was dying when she lost it. They could buy a charger, i guess.
